I am Erik Schouten (1973) and i am a bronzecaster and a replicamaker.
After I finished my secondary technical school as a mechanical technician i joined the Royal Dutch Navy. It was a two year adventure and a life changing period. But when i got back i didn’t know what to do with my carrier. I needed to start a new adventure so i applied for a job as a blacksmith at the museumpark Archeon. I worked there for eight Years. During that time i specialized myself in a lot of thing, i was a coördinator prehistory, i did gladiator fights, black smithing, tours in the museum, entertainment for parties and lots of other things. But most of all, i was a prehistoric bronze caster. I’ve cast axes, spears and other tools. During that time i developed an interest for the early medieval times and specially for early medieval jewellery. More and more people came to me and asked if i could cast jewellery for them. After eight years i started a new adventure and wend to work in archeology and also specialized me in making enameled brooches. While working in archeology i have seen a lot of beautiful jewellery from the past. My interest in making replica’s started to grow and i decided to do a gold smithing course given by Ben van Helden in Zeist. After two years following this course he said to me “if you want to go further as a goldsmith you need to take this serious and go to a school for goldsmiths. In this course i can’t teach you a lot any more.” in the beginning of 2011 i moved to Deventer and started working at HBO Archeology at the university of applied science Saxion. That was sadly a short adventure. I was in a strange city with no job. I started dreaming to become a professional replicamaker and goldsmith. After a few short contracts at different companies i got the opportunity to start an apprentice at a goldsmith and a course on how to start a business. At this moment i am finishing up the course and i am at the beginning of a new adventure.
